What Is Knob and Tube Wiring?

The term “knob and tube” (K&T) describes an obsolete method of wiring which dates back to the 1880s and was widely used through the 1940s. Knob and tube wiring was originally designed for electric lighting and considered a passing fad that would likely be too expensive compared to the widely used gas lighting of the day.

This type of electrical wiring consists of two conductors (hot and neutral) with no grounding that is stretched and secured along the wood beams by porcelain “knobs” and routed through porcelain “tubes” that were drilled through holes in the beams to keep the conductors away from contacting the wood and prevent overheating the walls.

The Dangers of Not Updating Your Home's Wiring

Having knob and tube wiring in your home is no laughing matter. This type of system has no capability of grounding and is easily overloaded by modern electrical products in your home. Additionally, one of the most significant dangers of knob and tube wiring is the risk of fire. Knob and tube wiring has become outdated due to the high risk of insulation fire. When the wiring’s insulation breaks down, it can spark and cause a fire. That’s why it’s important to schedule a knob and tube removal as soon as possible.

There is no acceptable or safe method for repairing K&T wiring to make it support modern requirements without replacing the wiring system. For this reason, many insurance companies will no longer offer coverage for homes with knob and tube wiring.

Luckily, our team can handle your knob and tube or aluminum wiring replacement with ease. Our licensed electricians will make sure you receive the best possible solution with quality workmanship, no matter your needs or standards.

Gen3 added a 110V outlet and ran a new line from my box. It was probably the most transparent, communicative, and calming experience I've had with a contractor. Branden was awesome, answerred all my questions, and quickly installed this new outlet. I highly recommend Gen3!!

Gen3 removed the old knob and tube wiring from our house. It was a big job but Aaron and Mike & co were great. Very respectful towards us and our stuff. Very efficient, professional and hard working. Showed up exactly when they said they would and left a clean work space at the end of the day. Polite and communicative and trustworthy. Job started and ended right when they said it would and came in right on the dollar per original estimate. We chose them based on the recommendation of our neighbors and would definitely recommend them to others.

Gen 3 just installed a mini split system in my apartment. Every person I dealt with was exceptionally pleasant. The installers (Eric and Jonathan and crew) stayed in touch with me and made sure I was happy with the unit placement. It was a major job, requiring a lot of people, and they got it done ahead of schedule. I could not be more pleased with the service, and I will absolutely use Gen 3 in future for any electrical work I need.

Should Your Home Get Rewired?

Though scheduling a whole house rewiring may seem like an overwhelming task, it’s worth considering as an investment. There are various reasons why you may want to update your electrical system.

For instance, if you’re planning any major renovations, you should expect to need additional electrical and power requirements. In fact, it’s an excellent time to update your old knob and tube or aluminum wiring, as the walls are already open. Not only will you be able to handle the increased power loads from the renovations, but you’ll also put your mind at ease knowing your electrical system is safer and up-to-date.

Are your electrical outlets not working correctly? Have you noticed that your lights are flickering or breakers keep tripping? These issues could indicate that there’s a problem with your home’s electrical wiring. If you have continued problems, it’s time to call in a professional to troubleshoot and diagnose the issue. Whole house rewiring may be the solution to the root cause, meaning the electrical problems you’ve experienced in the past may no longer be an issue.

While rewiring your home isn’t a small undertaking, it’s an investment that can offer you peace of mind. Whether you’re improving your home’s safety, upgrading your electrical service, or accommodating your needs, a professional electrician can help walk you through the process.

Benefits of Updating Your Homes Wiring

Updating your home’s knob and tube or aluminum wiring has many benefits that can save you money and protect your property.

One of the primary reasons you should consider a home wiring update is to enhance safety. If your home’s electrical wiring is outdated or installed improperly, it can become a significant safety risk. Old wiring can potentially cause electrical shocks, sparks, or even fire hazards.
Upgrading your home’s electrical system can also significantly increase its resale value. Most potential buyers look for modern amenities, and an updated electrical system is certainly an added bonus. With whole-house rewiring, you can assure potential buyers that they are not purchasing a safety hazard and that the home has energy-efficient features.
An outdated electrical system can be a significant source of energy consumption in your home. Fortunately, with whole house rewiring, you can install more energy-efficient appliances, which can increase savings on your electricity bills.
Adding new electrical outlets, switches, or light fixtures to your home may require new electrical wiring. Scheduling a home wiring update can also allow you to choose the new technology and have it installed easily.
