From Outdated Wiring to Future-Ready Power
Technicians: Griffin, Prince, Chris, Brandon, Cesar, Nick
Service Type: Electrical Rewire
Location: Philadelphia, PA
Project Investment: Around $21,000 – $26,000
Why This Project Was Needed
This Philadelphia home, built in 1912, carried over a century of history and with it, outdated wiring systems that no longer met modern electrical safety standards. Like many homes of this era, it still contained knob-and-tube wiring and other older generations of wire, some of which even shared neutrals. While this wiring may have once served its purpose, it poses risks today: reduced safety, limited capacity for modern appliances, and difficulty passing inspections.
Challenges of Older Homes
- Aging Infrastructure: Original circuits included knob-and-tube and cloth-insulated wiring, which needed to be fully deactivated and replaced.
- Load Capacity: At around 1,000 sq. ft. with 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, the home had outgrown its original electrical system. Modern living, from central AC to smart home upgrades, demands far more capacity than a 1912 service panel can provide.
- Panel Issues: The existing panel was full, poorly organized, and located directly above plumbing, which isn’t ideal for safety. Some circuits were unlabeled or inconsistently labeled, creating confusion for the homeowner.
- Meter & Service: The meter enclosure had been improperly installed upside down by a previous contractor, requiring replacement along with the riser and grounding system.
Scope of Work
Our electricians carefully mapped, removed, and replaced outdated circuits to bring the entire system up to code. Here’s what the rewire included:
- Replacement of old ungrounded wiring for ceiling fixtures, outlets, and wall fixtures
- Installation of 7 recessed lights (living room, stair landing, and kitchen)
- Conversion of outlets to GFCI protection where required by code
- Full rewire of knob-and-tube and old circuits, with all obsolete wiring deactivated and removed where visible
- New main service upgrade, including replacement of the electrical panel, meter, riser, and grounding system
- Installation of a hardwired smoke/CO detector in the basement
Optional upgrades offered included recessed lighting in bedrooms and whole-home surge protection.
Before the Upgrade: What We Found
Outdated Electrical Panel
The original panel was cluttered with tangled wires, unlabeled circuits, and moisture concerns due to its proximity to plumbing. While technically functional, it lacked the neatness, safety, and modern organization expected today.

Unsafe Switches

We also found light switches missing cover plates and mounted loosely. While small, these issues matter exposed wiring and loose connections can lead to faster wear, arcing, or even fire risks.
Exterior Service Concerns
The exterior meter box showed signs of improper installation and wear, a reminder that service equipment ages just like interior wiring. Without correcting these issues, the home wouldn’t have been able to safely handle the upgraded panel.

Before & After Value
By upgrading to a modern 200-amp service and rewiring outdated circuits, this home is now safer, more energy-efficient, and more attractive to future buyers. For Philadelphia homeowners, electrical upgrades don’t just improve daily living, but they also boost long-term property value and peace of mind.
Energy Efficiency & Smart Tech Readiness
Rewires aren’t only about safety; they’re about preparing homes for the future. This project gives the homeowner the flexibility to add:
- An EV charger
- High-efficiency HVAC systems
- Smart home devices and automation
- Potential solar panel integration
With a modern electrical backbone, the home is ready for whatever technology comes next.
Safety Education: Warning Signs for Homeowners
Not sure if your home needs an electrical upgrade? Look out for these common signs:
- Flickering or dimming lights
- Burning smell near outlets or panels
- Two-prong, ungrounded outlets
- Breakers that trip often
- Exposed wiring in basements or attics
If you notice any of these issues, it’s time to schedule an inspection with a licensed electrician.
Timeline & Crew Effort
With a team of six skilled electricians, this Philadelphia electrical rewire was carefully completed in stages over multiple days to minimize disruption to the homeowner. Coordinated teamwork ensured each phase, from pulling wire to replacing the service panel, was done efficiently and with the highest level of craftsmanship.
Why This Matters for Homeowners
Electrical rewires are more than just “pulling new wires.” They ensure:
- Safety: Old, ungrounded wiring and improper installations create fire and shock risks.
- Capacity: A modern panel supports today’s appliances, HVAC systems, and even future upgrades like EV chargers.
- Code Compliance: Meeting NEC and Philadelphia code requirements prevents failed inspections and ensures resale value.
- Peace of Mind: Homeowners can flip a switch knowing their system is safe, reliable, and built to last.
