From a Navy electrician in the 1940s to one of the most trusted names in Philadelphia electrician and HVAC services today, our history reflects hard work, community, and growth.
Generation 1: A Navy Electrician
The GEN3 story begins with Bill’s grandfather, William (who Bill is named after), an electrician in the U.S. Navy. William worked for Elmer’s Schulz by doing electrical repairs in South Hampton, Pennsylvania. His skills and dedication sparked the foundation for a family trade that would continue through generations of providing electrical services in Philadelphia.
Generation 2: Charles Lutz Builds the Business
Early Career in Philadelphia
Bill’s father, Charles Lutz (named after his uncle who died during World War II), continued the family trade by also working as an electrician in the U.S. Navy. During this time, he also learned electrical craft directly from his own father. In addition, his career path took him through roles at Sears, the railroad, and the City of Philadelphia. Eventually, he decided to venture out on his own, and this wide range of experience in electrical services ultimately helped lay the foundation for future milestones.
Starting His Own Electrical Company
In the 1980s, Charles started his own electrical company with his friend Jimmy. With no internet or social media to spread the word, he relied on the Yellow Pages and good old-fashioned word of mouth to grow his reputation. His very first clients were real estate companies and general contractors.
Charles valued keeping his company small and personal; in fact, his motto was, ‘That’s too hard of a nut to crack,’ whenever big expansion ideas came up. Instead of pursuing rapid growth, he focused on delivering consistent, high-quality service in the Philadelphia electrical sector. As a result, his reputation for reliability and personal attention continued to grow.
Even after Charles got sick, he was still quite popular and had people request services.
Passing Knowledge to the Next Generation
Charles passed down a wealth of knowledge to his son, Bill, who often helped him on weekends and summer breaks, gaining hands-on experience early on. This foundation was crucial for future expansion into HVAC and electrical services.
Generation 3: Bill Lutz and the Birth of GEN3 Electric & HVAC
From Architecture to Electrical Work
After graduating from Temple University with a degree in architecture, Bill realized his true passion was in electrical work. With his determination, and encouragement from his parents, he started GEN3 Electric in May 2000 with just himself and a single truck. This initiative paved the way for the integration of HVAC and electrical services in Philadelphia.
The Early Days of GEN3 Electric
Bill’s first employee was his good friend Michael, and soon after, the company began to grow steadily. By 2002, GEN3 had three electricians and two trucks. By 2005, a third truck was added to serve more homes across Philadelphia with electrical panel upgrades and repair work. This growth set the stage for additional services.
Expanding to HVAC Services in Philadelphia
With the support of his wife, Debbie, Bill expanded GEN3 into what it is today:
- Over 90 employees
- 30+ service trucks
- 3 locations across the Philadelphia metro area
- A dedicated heating and cooling division providing trusted HVAC services in Philadelphia
