GEN3 Knows Philly: A 200-Amp Upgrade in PVC Conduit

Modern Service Upgrades for Philadelphia Homes

At GEN3, we complete electrical service work all across Philadelphia. We work on rowhomes, renovations, and multi-unit properties. One of the most common projects we perform is a 200-amp upgrade.

Many older homes still have outdated electrical systems. These systems often need a full-service replacement to meet today’s standards.

Recently, we completed a job that looked different than most city installs. This project required rigid PVC conduit.

The Before: Older Service Entrance Wiring

Older Philadelphia properties often have original service wiring from decades ago. In this case, the home had exposed service entrance cable attached directly to the brick wall.

That type of setup offers very little protection. It also does not meet modern requirements for many upgrades.

When homeowners schedule a 200-amp upgrade, the service equipment often needs to be replaced.

The Upgrade: 200 Amp Service Replacement in Conduit

For this project, we installed a full 200-amp upgrade in conduit. We also upgraded the home with a new 40-space electrical panel.

The new service provided several benefits:

  • Stronger exterior protection
  • A cleaner and safer installation
  • Better long-term durability

Instead of using metal conduit, we installed rigid PVC conduit from the weather head down to the meter.

Why PVC Conduit Is Less Common in Philly

Most service upgrades in Philadelphia use metal raceways. Electricians often install:

  • Rigid metal conduit
  • EMT where permitted
  • Older SE cable on legacy homes

PVC conduit is less common in the city. Utility requirements and urban conditions usually influence material choices.

Still, some projects call for PVC. When installed correctly, it works well for a 200-amp upgrade.

Project Scope Summary

This job included:

  • A full 200-amp upgrade in conduit
  • A 40-space panel replacement
  • Meter service replacement
  • Interior lighting retrofit work
  • Plastic coverings to protect the workspace

GEN3 Takeaway

At GEN3, we know Philadelphia electrical systems. We also know that every home brings unique challenges.

Even though PVC conduit is not part of every city install, we complete every 200-amp upgrade safely and cleanly.

If you need a service upgrade or panel replacement, GEN3 is ready to help.
