Knob & Tube Replacement

Knob & Tube Wiring Replacement in Philadelphia, PA

Many of the most beautiful, character-filled homes in the Philadelphia metro area were built when “modern” electrical needs meant little more than a single lightbulb in the center of the room. If you live in one of our city’s iconic row homes or a historic Victorian in the suburbs, have you ever stopped to wonder exactly what is happening behind your plaster walls?

While the architectural charm of a century-old home is undeniable, the outdated electrical wiring, specifically Knob and Tube (K&T) wiring, can make modern conveniences feel ten times harder. Trying to run a high-efficiency HVAC system, charge multiple electric devices, or simply use a modern hair dryer and a microwave at the same time can be a source of constant frustration. Beyond daily inconveniences, old wiring can make home insurance renewals or property sales feel like an uphill battle.

Fortunately, you don’t have to let century-old electrical systems disturb your peace of mind or safety for long. At GEN3 Electric & HVAC, our expert electricians are ready to jump into action and modernize your home’s infrastructure. We’ll use our two decades of experience as your “Friendly Neighborhood Home Expert” to improve your home’s safety, reliability, and capacity. If you suspect your home still relies on 1920s-era technology, it’s time to bring it into the 2020s. Contact GEN3 Electric & HVAC today to request an estimate or book your service!

Is Your Philly Home Still Using Knob & Tube Wiring?

Knob and Tube wiring was the standard method of electrical installation in North America from the late 1880s through the 1940s. While it was a marvel of engineering at the time, it was never designed to handle the electrical load of a modern household. Because Philadelphia is home to so many historic properties, K&T wiring is still incredibly common in our local neighborhoods.

Since your wiring is tucked away behind walls and under floorboards, you might not know it’s there. Here are several signs and visual cues that your Philadelphia home still uses this legacy system:

  • Visible Ceramic Knobs: If you look in your basement or attic and see white, cylindrical ceramic “spools” (knobs) nailed to the joists with wires wrapped around them, you have K&T wiring.
  • Ceramic Tubes: You may see ceramic tubes inserted into holes drilled through wooden joists. These were designed to protect the wire as it passed through the wood.
  • Two-Prong Outlets: K&T systems are ungrounded. If your home is filled with original two-prong outlets rather than the modern three-prong versions, it is a strong indicator that the underlying system has not been fully modernized.
  • Lack of Insulation: Modern wires are encased in plastic (Romex). K&T wires are typically individual copper conductors wrapped in a cloth-like rubberized fabric. Over time, this fabric becomes brittle and flakes off, leaving bare wire exposed.
  • Frequent Blown Fuses or Tripped Breakers: If your electrical panel is constantly struggling to keep up with your appliances, the vintage wiring may be over-taxed.

The Risks of Outdated Electrical Systems

Living with Knob and Tube wiring isn’t just an inconvenience; it carries significant risks that every homeowner should understand. While the system was safe for the low-demand era it was created in, today’s world is different.

Fire Hazards

The biggest concern with K&T wiring is insulation breakdown. Because the wires are wrapped in cloth and rubber, a century of heat and environmental exposure causes that insulation to crack and fall away. This leaves “live” bare copper wires exposed inside your walls. If these wires touch each other or come into contact with flammable building materials, the risk of an electrical fire increases dramatically.

Lack of Grounding

Modern electrical systems include a “ground” wire, or the third prong on your plugs. This wire provides a safe path for excess electricity to travel in the event of a surge or a fault. Knob and Tube wiring is a two-wire system with no ground. This means your expensive electronics, like computers and 4K televisions, are at high risk of being fried by power surges, and you face a higher risk of electrical shock.

Insurance and Real Estate Hurdles

Many modern insurance companies will outright refuse to provide coverage for a home with active Knob and Tube wiring, or they will charge significantly higher premiums. If you are trying to sell your home in the Philadelphia area, a home inspector will almost certainly flag K&T wiring, which can stall a sale or lead to heavy price concessions.

Our Seamless Knob & Tube Replacement Process

At GEN3 Electric & HVAC, we understand that the thought of “rewiring a whole house” sounds daunting. Many homeowners fear that their beautiful plaster walls will be demolished or that they’ll have to move out for weeks.

As your Friendly Neighborhood Home Expert, we’ve spent twenty years perfecting a seamless replacement process that prioritizes your home’s integrity:

  • Comprehensive Evaluation: We start with a thorough inspection to determine which parts of your system are active K&T and which have already been updated.
  • Strategic Planning: We map out the most efficient way to run new, grounded Romex wiring. We often use “fishing” techniques to pull wires through existing cavities, significantly reducing the need for large holes.
  • Minimal Disruption: We treat your home with the respect it deserves. We use drop cloths, wear shoe covers, and aim to make only small, surgical openings where absolutely necessary.
  • Full System Modernization: We don’t just replace the wires; we ensure your outlets, switches, and electrical panel meet modern safety codes, giving you a home ready for the next 50 years of technology.

George was an excellent help with installing 2 new recessed lights and wiring an area for a chandelier id like to put in. He was so kind and informative, and cleaned up after his work was complete. I am satisfied with the work and would use them again!

Gen3 added a 110V outlet and ran a new line from my box. It was probably the most transparent, communicative, and calming experience I've had with a contractor. Branden was awesome, answerred all my questions, and quickly installed this new outlet. I highly recommend Gen3!!

Gen3 removed the old knob and tube wiring from our house. It was a big job but Aaron and Mike & co were great. Very respectful towards us and our stuff. Very efficient, professional and hard working. Showed up exactly when they said they would and left a clean work space at the end of the day. Polite and communicative and trustworthy. Job started and ended right when they said it would and came in right on the dollar per original estimate. We chose them based on the recommendation of our neighbors and would definitely recommend them to others.

Gen 3 just installed a mini split system in my apartment. Every person I dealt with was exceptionally pleasant. The installers (Eric and Jonathan and crew) stayed in touch with me and made sure I was happy with the unit placement. It was a major job, requiring a lot of people, and they got it done ahead of schedule. I could not be more pleased with the service, and I will absolutely use Gen 3 in future for any electrical work I need.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to replace Knob and Tube wiring?

The cost varies based on the size of the home and the accessibility of the wiring. Because every Philly row home and suburban colonial is unique, we provide customized estimates that reflect the specific needs of your property and budget.

Most full-house rewires take between 5 and 10 business days. However, we work systematically so that you can usually remain at home while the work is performed.

You may hear that K&T is “fine if left alone.” The problem is that modern homes don’t leave it alone. We add insulation (which causes K&T to overheat), and we plug in high-draw devices. Once the system is stressed or the insulation has crumbled, it is no longer safe.

While a total rewire is the safest option, we can work with you to prioritize the highest-risk areas of your home first to fit your financial planning.
