Experience Matter, especially in Philadelphia’s Historic Homes
When you’ve spent more than 25 years working in Philadelphia’s rowhomes, stone twins, and century-old properties, you learn that no two houses are alike. Because of this, GEN3 has mastered how to design and install modern HVAC systems in tight and challenging spaces. This is especially important for any Philadelphia mini split installation, since older homes require thoughtful planning and skilled routing.
This recent 6-zone Mitsubishi ductless heat pump project in Mt. Airy shows how our experience makes a real difference.
A Philly Home with Philly Challenges
This brick home is more than a century old, which creates several challenges that commonly appear during a Philly mini split installation, including:

Thick masonry walls
Tight pathways behind chimney chases
Three finished floors
Limited interior chase space
Long line-set runs that require careful routing
Even so, projects like this are where GEN3 shines. Our team works cleanly in tight spaces while protecting system performance. As a result, the homeowner gets a system that looks good and runs well.
The Project: A Full-Home Mitsubishi Ductless System
Over five days, our installers redesigned the home’s comfort system. They used one outdoor Mitsubishi heat pump and connected it to six indoor units, creating a complete Philadelphia mini split installation that serves all three floors.
Indoor Units Installed
First Floor:
• One 18k BTU high-wall unit for the main living space
Second Floor:
• Three 9k BTU high-wall units for bedrooms and offices
Third Floor:
• Two 9k BTU floor-mounted units, ideal for knee-walls and sloped ceilings
All units were mounted on exterior walls. This layout allows each unit to drain by gravity, which keeps the system simple, reliable, and service-friendly. Learn more about Mitsubishi Electric multi-zone system at All-climate heat pumps for every project | Mitsubishi Electric HVAC US
Why Experience Matters: Line-Sets, Branch Boxes & Tight Routing
This job required expert-level refrigerant line routing, including multiple zoom lock fittings, reducers, long vertical runs, and two Mitsubishi branch boxes (1 three-port and 1 five-port).
The photos show key examples of the craftsmanship:
Clean brazed and zoom-lock connections
Protected copper runs with UV-rated insulation
Decorative PVC line-hide matching the home’s exterior
Branch box mounting in tight exterior wall spaces
Pressure testing on a Yellow Jacket manifold to ensure leak-free operation

These details are why customers choose GEN3 when precision is required.
Outdoor Unit Placement
The outdoor condenser was set behind the chimney bend on a new pad, a smart choice for:
- Minimizing visibility
- Shortening multiple line-set pathways
- Protecting equipment from weather and foot traffic
GEN3 also installed:
- A new safety disconnect
- A dedicated whip
- A complimentary surge protector for added equipment safety
Start-Up & Testing: No Shortcuts
Once installation was complete, our technicians performed:

Full leak testing
Vacuum and pressure stabilization
Refrigerant charge verification
Temperature and airflow calibration
Voltage and communication checks
Finally, we completed a full walk-through with the homeowner to ensure they understood system operation and maintenance.
The Homeowner’s Review Says It All
“We had a wonderful experience with the entire Gen3 team and our installers Eric and Cush in particular. They were super friendly and personable, just really nice guys to work with. The installation went very smoothly and was completed right on time. All the way through our boys were diligent, professional and quiet, and always available to answer questions… Why did we wait 27 years to do this?!”
A great project and a fantastic homeowner, the perfect combination.
